Your niche will decide what you write in your blog and who the audience is. Your audience can be anyone, including people in the legal practice. So how do you choose a niche and what niches are there for legal blogs?

1. Identifying your Interest and Expertise

You would want to blog on something you’re interested in or have mastered, or both. You may not enjoy maintaining a blog you have zero interest in.

3. Make it Scalable

3. Host Your Legal Blog and Install WordPress

A blog is a website too, which means it needs to find a place on the internet. A blog needs a platform and a host to be available on the internet.

Consider your blog to be a person who is relocating to the new city of the World Wide Web. They will need a house (a blogging platform) and that house needs to be on a plot of land (Host).

The best blogging platform to use is WordPress and it can be hosted by a hosting provider called Bluehost. I’m now going to show you how to host your WordPress blog on Bluehost

1. You start by going to Bluehost and on the homepage you drag the cursor to WordPress and choose WordPress Hosting.

2. Next, you scroll down to see the plans and you select a plan. I recommend you choose the Basic plan to start your blogging journey, you can choose a better plan later.

3. Now it’s time to create your domain name (house address of your blog), you can use your blog name here. You enter your domain name under “create a new domain” and you choose the extension “.com” then you click “Next”.

4. If your domain is available you will be directed to a page to create your account so you can add your Account information.

5. Scroll down, check your package information, and add any necessary package extras. I suggest you add “Domain Privacy + Protection”

6. Scroll down further and enter your payment information then click submit. Et voilà!

From this point, Bluehost will help you install WordPress.

4. Install a WordPress Theme

The theme you will add to your Legal blog will set the impression your audience has of your blog and your brand. You can check this article out where I explain what a WordPress Theme is to fully grasp its importance.

1. Choose a WordPress Theme

You should choose a Business oriented WordPress theme. Such a theme will signal any visitor on the page about your seriousness and give your brand credibility and trust. I recommend Bridge and Newspaper as WordPress themes that would fit your legal blog.

2. Customize Your Theme

When you choose a wordpress theme make sure it has the design, and customization options and is user-friendly enough for you. You can then customize and get the best out of your theme.

3. Optimize It

Another important thing is the features, speed, and optimization of the Theme. An optimized theme (speed and intuitiveness) will make it possible for visitors to enjoy their experience on your blog from any device at all. 

You can follow the steps below to install a WordPress Theme on your Legal Blog:

1. Log in to your WordPress admin dashboard.

2. Navigate to the “Appearance” tab on the left-hand side menu and click on “Themes.”

3. On the Themes page, click on the “Add New” button at the top.

4. You can either search for a theme by typing in the search bar or upload a theme from your computer by clicking on the “Upload Theme” button.

5. If you choose to search for a theme, browse through the available options and click on the “Install” button for the theme you want to use.

6. If you choose to upload a theme, click on the “Choose File” button and select the theme’s .zip file from your computer. Then, click on the “Install Now” button.

7. Once the theme is installed, click on the “Activate” button to make it the active theme for your website.

8. You can customize the theme further by clicking on the “Customize” button or access the theme settings by clicking on the “Theme Details” button.

That’s it! You have successfully installed and activated a WordPress theme. Now you can start customizing it to suit your needs.

5. Install Necessary WordPress Plugins

One of the things I enjoy the most about WordPress is plugins. They are very useful and unbelievably effective. A plugin is a tool you use to add functionality to your blog or that helps you customize it.

Here is how to install a plugin onto your WordPress Blog:

1. Navigate to the left-hand sidebar of your dashboard and click on “Plugins” and then “Add New.”

2. In the search bar located at the top right corner, type the name or functionality of the plugin you want to install.

3. WordPress will display a list of relevant plugins. Browse through the results to find the plugin you want to install.

4. When you find the desired plugin, click on the “Install Now” button located below the plugin’s name.

5. WordPress will begin installing the plugin. Once the installation is complete, the “Install Now” button will change to an “Activate” button.

6. Click on the “Activate” button to activate the plugin on your WordPress blog.

7. After activation, you may need to configure the plugin’s settings. This can usually be done through a dedicated settings page or within the plugin’s menu on the WordPress dashboard.

8. Once the plugin is activated and configured, you can start using its features and functionalities on your WordPress blog.

Remember you are free to add more pages to the ones I mentioned above. If you sell products on your page you can for instance add a shop page. Add whatever pages are necessary but be careful not to add too many pages. You can create main pages and have categories under them just like a folder and a subfolder.
